founded in 2004 Space Performing Arts is a performance company engaged in the research and reanimation of traditional knowledge in theatre, dance, music, movement with a view to create a contemporary hybrid aesthetic and performance language. Over the years it has evolved a largely physical craft for feeding the physical, vocal and psychological expression of the actor based on certain physical forms like Mayur Bhanj Chaau, Khatkali, Yoga , Kalaripayattu & contemporary Techniques contact improvisation , Release technique and flying low. Although all these forms are rooted in a specific cultural context, Space Performing Arts has endeavored to seek out fundamental principles underlying these practices to make them applicable to a wide constituency of performers: those from different cultural and aesthetic contexts and from different kinds of contemporary and traditional performance.
Approach dance on a concept-based perspective rather than focusing on traditional techniques. I rely a modern dance technique that is inspired by Indian pioneers such as Uday Shankar, with the elements of Space, Time, Body, Effort, Movement and Form. Through this conceptual approach, students learn modern techniques, improvisation, and choreography, and community, somatic and musical awareness. As other techniques and styles are introduced through special programs, we explore how they support the above areas of emphasis. I took my class in a healthy risk taking environment. Students develop their skills in performing and perceiving through participation, as well as watching and supporting others in their class. This class environment values a commitment to self, to the group, and to lifelong exploration and learning. Dance technique is taught through concept that communicates with others in a social and cultural context.
